Personal Form 1
Under Purple Belt Curriculum

This is the first kata where students of our Kenpo Karate system synthesize what they know into a workable self-defense form. The original criteria used for the form (with Mr. Meredith's form) are five techniques and a minimum of fifteen basics (strikes, kicks, or blocks) in a linear form, meaning that it should move towards 12 o'clock. (Note: Mr. Meredith's kata does deviate and go towards 6 o'clock for his second attacker, but it immediately returns to moving towards 12 o'clock after that.)

Later, new rules were established in the creation of this kata to consist of at least 5 textbook techniques done, on both sides, with the strong side first. These techniques should use the 12, 3, 6, 9 o'clock lines (4 main directions). Other directions are optional. The form now will include at least 15 basics and a variety of stances and should follow a theme chosen by the student.

"Kenpo Karate
Experience it.
Learn it.
Understand it.
Create it!"
-Mr. Hughes

Here we have gathered students' Personal Katas on a page so other students can get ideas and enlightenment. Click on their name and you will be transported to their Personal Katas. The purpose of this page isn't meant for students of Kenpo Karate to copy the form verbatim. This kata is meant to show one's understanding of Kenpo Karate, not how it can be used to gain a belt which in essence will do nothing but hold up the Gi.
