Bob Rose

Bob Rose

10th Degree Master Bob Rose was born on August, 21 in Warwickshire, England of mixed heritage: a Scottish Grandfather, Cheyenne Native American Grandmother - English Mother, and he has lived in the US and UK and has dual nationality.

Mr. Rose has seen service with the French Foreign Legion in the late 50's as well as the US Army Airborne and Special Forces, and spent two combat tours of Vietnam in the late 60's where he was awarded the Purple Heart, two Vietnamese Gallantry Medals and Combat Infantry Badge 2nd Award.

Mr. Rose has been practicing the martial arts in general for nearly 40 years; he started training in Judo, then Hun Gar Kung Fu while in Hong Kong and reached 3rd Degree Sash there. He eventually settled in the art of Kenpo Karate after going to America in the late 1960's and early 1970's.

In the early 70’s, Mr. Rose would travel to Pasadena, California to begin his study of American Kenpo. It was on one of these visits that Mr. Tatum was first introduced to him by Mr. Parker at the West Los Angeles school. At that very meeting Mr. Rose asked Mr. Tatum if he would give him a lesson- Mr. Tatum did, and kept that relationship since.

Teaching the martial arts in England at that time for a living was not a means to a secure financial life. Most people could only afford two to three pounds per week for lessons (which at the time translated to about 4 American dollars). Mr. Rose would spend many nights sleeping in his car with his family after teaching a full day in the studio. But Mr. Rose perceived to fulfill his dream of making Kenpo a vocational life style for himself and others to follow.

That dream did come true; to date Mr. Rose has produced hundreds of some of the best black belts in the Kenpo system and has helped many more of his countrymen and women achieve their dreams and goals through Kenpo.

Mr. Rose received his 10th Dan ranking on June 5, 2000, the ranking was personally presented to him by his instructor Mr. Larry Tatum, also a 10th Degree Black Belt.

Master Rose is recognized by many as the Father of American Kenpo in the United Kingdom.

Much of this information is found on the BKKU website and on Larry Tatum's letter also found there.
